An Introduction

Journaling as a learning portfolio

As an ongoing assignment for my online financial course, I will blog about my learning experiences here. The idea is that blogging publicly will give me a deeper learning experience, holding myself accountable to learn something well enough to communicate it – as well as showcase to others any growth I experience. I should write about and reflect on things I learn, connect my learnings to my life experiences, and talk about ideas I have. This forces me to think more critically and actively throughout the course specialization.

Why I’m Taking this Course

Two reasons. First, I want to apply concepts I learn to my own personal finances and confidently make decisions in this area. Secondly, I want to more deeply understand economic issues and have general business-sense. If there is a recession coming, I want to understand it and know how to better handle my assets.

Currently, I have a basic understanding of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and accounting. I maintain an investment portfolio, but all I know is I should diversify. In general, I don’t feel like I have a deep understanding of investing and how to actually strategize. Maybe I know more than I think I do; but what I really want is the same level of confidence in the field of finance, as I do in software engineering (my professional field).
